Writers Feedback

So a couple of days before Christmas I posted a full-length novel on Literotica.com. Threads: The Island, the first in a series of stories I've got written about interconnecting characters, mostly normal people pushed into extraordinary circumstances.

Threads: The Island is a story about a guy who has his life flipped on its head after a visit from a lawyer, and he has to try and cope with everything that follows. It takes place over the course of a week and it's all about the characters, how they feel, how they react, how much they're affected by their emotions and their own journeys.

So I posted it, all 150,000 words of it. 42 pages on Lit. The feedback was a real eye-opener.

The first few messages I got, either comments posted on the story itself or emailed to me through the contact page were harsh, very critical about the size of the story. One guy even called me an 'Utter Cunt' for cockblocking his available wanking time with a story that was too long for him to jerk off to. Nice. Other comments included 'No-one's ever going to read it' and 'It should be in chapters you dumb fucker'. After twentyfour hours online, it was sitting with a rating of 1.26 out of 5. Talk about gutted - I always aim for the red H, a marking that indicates a rating of at least 4.5 out of 5.

I gave some serious thought to pulling the story offline then and there.

Then I started to get the feedback through from those who read the whole tale. Wow. Blown away. People really loved it. So much so that it went from 1.26 to 4.84 within the following 48 hours. Some of the comments from people were so kind, so enthusiastic about the characters that you couldn't help but see they'd bonded with these fictional people I'd created. What a feeling as a writer to know that people really connect with your creation.
Since then it's pushed itself to the top of the toplist, number 1 out of 25,500 or so stories and I've felt both delighted and stressed about that fact. Delighted because people have enjoyed it so much that they've rated it that highly, and because if its at the top of the top-list, people will continue to read it. Stressed because how do you top that with your follow-up?

I've been speculating in my own head that perhaps it might have been better not to allow voting or comments, but then I wouldn't have had some of the wonderful inspiring words that I've had, and the two hundred or so people who have used the comment form on my member page would stilll have contacted me anyway. If I hadn't rated it, then it would have slipped off into Lit-obscurity by now, with maybe a new reader in a fortnight. As it is, it's still going strong. Over 110,000 readers in eighteen days.

I continue to get feedback, and for the most part, it's very heartening and inspiring for me. To know that I've written a novel that's made people stay up until two, three or four in the morning just to finish it is an awesome feeling.

But it really is a double-edged sword. If they love it, will they love the next one. When they tell you what they enjoyed, they tell you what they want to see in the next one, and if that's not what they want, will they be disappointed. There's a flip side to every coin, and for every positive comment there's a negative possibility.

I think the only way to deal with their expectations is not to bow to them, but continue to write my story the way I want to write it. If they like it, then great. If not, then that's okay too. That's just the way it goes, but at least then I'll know I'm writing my story for me and being true to that.

And let the feedback fall as it may.

JJ

  1. Listen dude, I fucking loved your story, pretty soon I was not looking at it as a literotica submission, but as a piece of art that I loved. I finished it last night and was sad that it ended. I can't wait for your next one, and write it as you see fit.

    1. Hi, and thanks for dropping by.
I'm writing right now, actually it's fairer to say I'm writing multiple stories right now. Here's what I'm working on.

      1) A short story for literotica, told from Ed's perspective that covers the two days they're in San Antonio. It also introduces David, an integral character to the next story, as well as Kyle, Patricia, Lakshmi, Caroline and Casey. ETA end of January.
      2) The follow-up to The Island. The continuing story from Kyle, the aftermath of events on the Island, his relationship with Patricia, Katie and Kara, and a whole new big problem to deal with. Actually, several. ETA... honestly, when it's done. It won't be in the next couple of months, because it took me three months to write The Island. Drop me an email and I'll let you know when it's online though. There's a couple of hundred people on the list already :-)
      3) David's backstory, a novel-length tale of voyeurism, pornography, isolation and incest.

I'm also converting The Island to an e-book, and hopefully you'll be able to download or buy it as part of a bundle, along with Ed's story, and exclusively, Davids story from the website I'm still building. That's just a thought right now though, but one I'll explore further.

Hope that helps clarify things a little.

  4. This answer was really helpfull (I guess for other readers too). Anyway, this probably isn't the right place for saying that but I just want to let you know that Threads are by far the best story for me on literotica (also, I sent my mail to you to be notified when next Threads will be available the moment I finish reading :)) and the best part for me was Kara's dancing :)

ps. sorry for my bad English :)

    1. No need to say sorry - I'm meant to be good at it, and I've been getting stick for it. Mostly on the differences between US and UK english, but the odd spelling mistake too.
And thankyou for saying so. I'm glad so many people are enjoying the story.
And writing Kara's dance scene was a lot of fun. Glad you liked it!

Just write the story the way you see fit. If you write to satisfy reader expectations, then there is no real need for them to read it, since you are saying you are giving them what they asked for. I don't know about others but I read a story for to find out what happens, not to confirm what I asked for. As long as it is well written it won't matter how it twist and turns. It will be read so that the readers can find out what happens next to the characters they find themselves drawn to. Be it good or bad.

you've said story told from Ed's point of view is coming in the end of January. So January is over, where is the story? :( I don't want to be annoying, but you just don't know, how hard it is to wait so long for your stories (the island is awsome!).

The Island is now in my top three favorite stories. It really is fantastic. Whenever I find a really good story I download to my PC. I have created it in the style of a book with chapters etc and you name is in the footer. Don't worry it is only for my enjoyment although I do tell friends about your story on the website. I must have read your story 5 or 6 times now and consequently have noticed some aspects which appear contrived. The reason for bringing the friends to the island was one. I can understand why. Kara had no friends, Kyle is "occupied"(Patricia!) so that left Katie. Incidentally how old is Patricia? Assuming she is a graduate and she worked for Danny Tripps for 9 years she has to be at least 30 years old.
Anyway just remember that the story is awesome and i cannot wait for the sequel. Honestly I cannot wait so when will it be published?

At first I felt like the man who said you cockblocked him. I know I got myself into it, since you yourself noted it before the story started. Nevertheless, I soldiered on and was quickly enthralled by the complexity of the story and characters.

I was delighhted by the combination of plot and sex. You managed to write a complex, well thought out plot, without it turning overly intellectual (some Tom Clancy type stuff). As a grad student, this became my escape from the world. As mentioned before, this became like a novellla to me, some light reading with some damn good sex scenes.

Sorry, needed to split the post:

I both applaud and commend your work.

I tried to seek you out in an attempt to ascertain whether or not you had published more stories. Alas, from what I can tell, you have been inactiv since. I hope to someday read more of the triplet's adventures!

Hi there, I've read this story probably 5 or 6 times now. Every time I read it, I think it would make a great movie. Sure they might have to tone down some of the sexual content...
